Cleansing Update: Day 7, Liver Flush

An optional, yet highly recommended, adjunct to our 10-day cleanse is a liver and gallbladder flush.  Day 7 is an ideal time to take the flush, as the body has already begun to deeply detoxify - and bile, stones and other toxins have begun to loosen up in the liver.  After 7 days of cleansing, liver supportive herbal remedies like our Renew-U extract have had sufficient time to prepare the liver and gallbladder for the flush. There was no question for me about including a liver flush in my cleanse, as my liver suffered some unrelenting abuse (wine and rich meals) over the holidays!

The traditional recipe for the flush, as recommended in the classic book The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush, is quite vile (to put it lightly).  You drink 4T of dissolved epsom salts in four 90-minute increments before drinking 1/2 a cup of olive oil with 3/4 cup of fresh-squeezed lemon juice.  This combo stimulates the liver and gall bladder to dump toxins and old bile into the intestines so they can be eliminated through the colon.  The epsom salts relax the bile duct so stones can pass, and empty the bowels to prepare for the flush.  Both Tierney and I decided to go all out this cleanse, and do the traditional flush... well I can tell you, that neither she nor I will be doing it this way again, as the epsom salts are beyond disgusting... especially after the 3rd or 4th go around. Yuck.  Though I must say that this morning, I did notice 3 pea-sized green floating stones in the toilet after my bowels moved... almost worth the suffering!

Due to the horribly unpleasant taste, and often harsh results of the traditional flush, Tierney formulated a tamer and much tastier, though still effective liver flush recipe.  We recommend taking this flush on days 6-10 of a 10-Day Cleanse.

Small pea-sized pebbles you may
notice after the flush (I did!)
The Herbalist's Liver Flush
3 Tb olive oil
Juice of 2 lemons
1 clove garlic
1'' piece ginger
pinch of cayenne
1 orange for taste (optional)

Directions: Mix ingredients in a blender and follow with a cup of herbal tea such as Tummy-Ease Tea or Peppermint.  Drink the tea immediately following flush.  Go to bed and lie on your right side with knees up to the chest.  Some people experience moderate nausea but this passes quickly. In the morning, you should have a healthy elimination.
