Tune-up and restore liver health:
The liver is a busy organ!

The liver is a busy organ. Between metabolizing food, digesting fat, making and breaking down hormones, and controlling body-wide detoxification, the liver gets quite the workout. Add to these jobs a bit too much alcohol or fatty food, and the liver can get fatigued. A seasonal liver flush is a great way to tune-up and restore liver function after a bout of “too much fun.”

Just recently, my 21-year old sister called me, stating that she and her 5 roommates were interested in liver cleansing. I was slightly taken aback, seeing as my sister has never cleansed before, nor really expressed an interest in it, but nonetheless I was up for the challenge of preparing her.

Seeing as she and her house of 6 college roommates are all 21, it wasn’t too difficult to discern the reason behind their desire to cleanse their livers. Too much alcohol was their main motivation, which is not an uncommon occurrence during the season of barbecues, beach parties and vacations. In addition to alcohol, too much fatty food, not enough exercise, pharmaceutical drug use can also be real justifications for cleansing the liver.

The flush stimulates the liver and gallbladder
to dump toxins into the small intestine and out
through the bowels.
The liver and gallbladder flush was the primary treatment I advised my sister and her gaggle of first-time cleansers to undertake. It involves drinking a combination of olive oil, lemon juice and fresh herbs. “We have to drink oil!?!” my sister said. It’s really not so bad I replied… and really, it’s not - if you can do fish oil, olive oil and lemon juice is like dessert.

Essentially the flush restores the normal functional capacity of the liver, especially helpful if it has been over-taxed. The high amount of oil combined with lemon juice stimulates the liver and gallbladder to dump toxins and old bile into the intestines so that they can be eliminated through the colon. It also stimulates the formation of new bile so that fat and alcohol digestion improves.

One of the best times to do the liver flush is in the evening just before bedtime. It is best to eat a light dinner so that the flush is done on an empty stomach.

Some people report passing small pea-
green stones after taking the liver flush:
these are gallstones.
How to Liver Cleanse:

Liver Flush Recipe:
Mix these ingredients in a blender or jar
Olive Oil – 3 Tbs.
Juice of 2 organic Lemons
Garlic – 1 medium clove, minced
Ginger – small chunk, minced
Cayenne pepper – just a pinch
Orange (optional) – 1 for taste

Directions for Liver and Gallbladder Flush:

Follow liver flush with a cup of
The Herbalist's Tummy-Ease Tea
1 - Prepare a cup of caffeine-free herbal tea such as Peppermint tea or our Tummy-ease tea.  Have this ready to drink immediately following the flush.
2 - Mix all ingredients in a blender and drink
3 - Immediately follow with a cup of herb tea. This helps relax the digestive tract and reduce the occurrence of cramping and nausea.
4 - Go to bed and lie on your right side with your knees up to your chest, this causes the mixture to go directly to your liver and gallbladder.
5 - In the morning you should have a healthy elimination. Some people even report observing small pea-green stones in the toilet which indicates the formation of gall stones.

The liver flush is a great addition to a complete internal cleansing regimen. We recommend it as part of our 10-Day Whole Body Cleansing Kits.

    ADDENDUM
Some of you have asked us if doing just one of the liver flushes is enough to get rid of stones. In response to this we would say for some yes, but for the best results doing the flush every night for one week is recommended to really loosen up and remove toxins, stones and old bile in the liver and gall bladder.
